The owners of Santa Monica's Temple Bar have branched out to the east, giving Silver Lake's dank ex-Garage space a stunning makeover. The look suggests Buddhist temple tranquility by way of Chinese lanterns, bamboo-lined walls, rock gardens and countless votive candles. Comfortable booths in the foyer give way to a simple raised DJ stage in the main room. The adjacent Moroccan-inspired area is highlighted by a communal bed and a wall-sized photomural of a holy man. The grooves here are more beat-heavy than its sister property's selection, but the mood is more of an elegant lounge--though some nights do get the crowd working up a sweat.
The nightly lineup is anchored by a mix of deep house, hip-hop and Afro-Latin club nights. Regardless of the music, the alternately tousled and urbane crowd is usually always pure Silver Lake hipster. | | |
