Can rivals in love become brothers in arms? A Lord troubadour, a gypsy and beautiful woman are linked by life, love and secrets. The action moves from the castles of il Conte di Luna to the battlegrounds of a conflict driven by dim memories of ancient wrongs and promises of vengeance. It's passionate, senseless and absolutely spectacular, from Manrico's heroic arias to the gypsies famous "Anvil Chorus".
Elke Neidhardt's production, updated to the Spanish Civil War, demonstrates how opera speaks the language of revolution, whatever the era.
Welsh-born tenor Dennis O'Neill is the troubadour Manrico, Michael Lewis is Di Luna, his challenger, and Leonora is sung by Nicole Youl. Finally, Bernadette Cullen returns to recreate her magnificent portrayal of the mysterious gypsy Azucena. |
